Downtown Newport News could see one of its most significant private investments in years as plans move forward for a major housing and mixed-use development.
On July 14, Newport News City Council approved a resolution supporting a project proposed by Hampton Roads PPV, LLC, an affiliate of Hunt Military Communities. City documents describe the proposal as involving approximately $450 million in capital investment at 2900 and 3100 Huntington Avenue. Newport News
The scale of the proposed investment makes the project particularly noteworthy for Downtown Newport News, where housing, redevelopment and activity surrounding the shipyard continue to play major roles in the area's evolution.
For the local commercial real estate market, a project of this size is worth watching beyond the housing component itself. Hundreds of millions of dollars in new investment can influence demand for nearby retail, services and other commercial uses while adding new residents and activity to the downtown area.
The project is still one to follow as additional details and milestones emerge.
NRD will continue tracking the development as it progresses.
